Think about it for a second.  Most stock Nut and Saddle combos are cheap plastic.  If you drop a plastic rod onto a hard surface it goes... "thud".  If you do the same with brass, you get a loud, clear "ring".  The same tonal characteristic applies to your guitar!
The Saddle measures:
