Family History:
The lineage of the name Hocknell begins with the Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain. It is a result of when they lived in the region of Hockenhull in the parish of Tarvin. Hocknell is a
topographic
surname, which was given to a person who resided near a physical feature such as a hill, stream, church, or type of tree.
Habitation
names form the other broad category of surnames that were derived from place-names. They were derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. Other local names are derived from the names of houses, manors, estates, regions, and entire counties. As a general rule, the greater the distance between an individual and their homeland, the larger the territory they were named after. For example, a person who only moved to another parish would be known by the name of their original village, while people who migrated to a different country were often known by the name of a region or country from which they came.
This name
was spelt as
Hockenhull, Hocknell, Hokenhull, Hoknell and others.
At first the coat of arms was a practical matter which served a function on the battlefield and in tournaments. With his helmet covering his face, and armor encasing the knight from head to foot, the only means of identification for his followers, was the insignia painted on his shield, and embroidered on his surcoat, the draped and flowing garment worn over the armor. Between the 11th and 15th centuries it became customary for surnames to be assumed in Europe, but they were not commonplace in England or Scotland before the Norman Conquest of 1066.
