GARB OF GRAIN SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
It is not easy to account for the persistence with which heraldry terms a sheaf a garb.
Unless described particularly as composed of barley or something else, it is presumed
to be of wheat, and is always drawn of the conventional form here shown ; the shield
being in fact the arms of the old Earldom of Chester, which was the equivalent of the
present county. The city of Chester uses the same coat of arms "dimidiated" by the
Royal arms of England. It is open to some doubt however whether the garbs were
actually the arms of the Earldom or the personal arms of the original Earls.
