There has been more controversy over the origin Of the "fleur-de-lis" than over any
other standard heraldic figure. France speaksand always has doneof her "lilies,"
but it is difficult to trace the resemblance between a fleur-de-lis and any known type of
lily. The " lis " is probably a corruption of Lois or Louis, and this is consistent with the
miraculous origin ascribed to the fleur-de-lis of France, which may well be really the
yellow iris. But less roman. tic origins have been suggested, some regarding the arms of
France which are on the shield as a corrupted form of the toads of Pharamond ; whilst
it is certain that the form Of the fleur- de-lis as a finial goes back to earliest times.
