BEZANT GOLD COIN SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
The bezant "' was a well-known gold coin of ancient days deriving its name from the
city of Byzantium. As part of the arms of Lombardy it was in frequent use as a sign by
bankers who were natives of that country, and from that origin degenerated into the
emblem of the pawnbroker. The arms depicted are those of Cornwall, and it is perhaps
most probable to suppose they are merely gilded peas suggested by the Countship of
Poictoue There is however a legendary origin which dates them to an occasion when
the Earldom of Cornwall was in pawn " to five pawnbrokers.
