A&L was a Birmingham (and Chester) firm known for its unique fancy smalls and novelty items, including all sorts of sewing articles, such as thimbles, scissors and pin cushions. They were most famous for their figural pin cushions. These were modeled as shoes but also as animals, most notably pigs, elephants, swans, camels, etc. These are very expensive today and hard to come by.
Their product line was extensive including brushes and vanity items, bookmarks, glove stretchers, nurse’s buckles, salt & peppers, baby rattles and christening sets and numerous others.
This piece is Victorian but they worked into the Edwardian era, ceasing operations circa 1927.
